Winter Depression Is Real, And It’s Hit CT

Fighting the winter blues? You aren’t alone. About 2% of people in Connecticut  report symptoms so severe they meet criteria for clinical depression.

90% of people tell Yale New Haven Hospital’s Winter Depression Clinic that they feel worst in the winter months.  Symptoms include low energy, down spirits, and weight gain. Symptoms can be related to patterns of melatonin secretion and hormone shifts in the winter months, also the human body has an acute awareness of dawn and dusk.

That’s why Paul Desan Md., PhD from the Winter Depression Clinic at Yale New Haven Hospital recommends light therapy.

“This is a major public health problem, we have people saying their lives shut down for half the year and there’s a simple solution- light every morning.”

Desan recommends a 10 thousand lux light box.  you’ll need to sit in front of it for 45 minutes, 7 days a week, before 8 am.  Light boxes are available for purchase online and cost between 100 and 200 dollars.

Desan is currently developing a model that is smaller, portable, and requires less time in front of it.
