Remember To Protect Pets From Ice Melt Products

Winter is a season of bitter cold for you and your four-footed family. We caught up with experts from Pet Supplies Plus in Wethersfield to learn more about keeping your pets happy and healthy during the dog days of winter.

A pink frock, a striped hat, a hand knit number. We do a lot to keep our pups fashion forward in the winter, but it’s also important to make sure they are safe.

“Every winter we sell a ton of booties,” said Frank Lyon, assistant manager of Pet Supplies Plus.

They’ve sold out of foot wear for four-legged friends, and with good reason. Owners are trying to protect their pets’ paws from toxic chemicals used in ice melt products.

“The more salt that gets in their paws, it can open wounds,” Lyon said. “And if they lick it, they can get vomiting and diarrhea. So it’s definitely something you want to try to avoid.”

Experts recommend opting for pet-friendly products instead of traditional ice melt products.

“[Typical products] usually contain sodium chloride and calcium chloride, which is just toxic. Works really good on ice, but not good for animals,” Lyon said.

It has been a concern this season for Andrew Wizner of Old Wethersfield and his black lab mix Lexus.

“We want to make sure their paws are intact and not injured because of the salt on the roads,” Wizner said.

Lexus isn’t into booties, but that’s OK. Cleaning your dog’s paws off in and out of the house will do the trick, too. Also, as best you can, keep your pets from eating snow or drinking melted snow. Ice melt in it will irritate their stomachs.

So keep those adorable pups pampered — and safe.
