Speed Sisters Come To Connecticut

Marah Zahalka’s career has had its share of twists and turns but that’s what’s to be expected if you are one of the few women race car drivers from Palestine.

22-year-old Marah is one of the Speed Sisters, billed as the Middle East’s first all-woman motor racing team.

Zahalka, from the town of Jenin, is in the United States for the first time attending a leadership conference in New York.

When Lime Rock Park in Lakeville found out the up and coming street racer was nearby, they opened their gates for Marah to take a few snow laps.

Stephanie Economu, a racing enthusiast from Collinsville and head of the “Gearhead Girls”, an online community for women in racing said, “they come from an area of the world where you never hear anything about this, you hear about tragedies and yet thriving in that environment is a group like the Speed Sisters.”

Zahalka and three other women comprise the Speed Sisters are now the focal point of a documentary film set to be released next year. Smiling in between laps at the track, Zahalka, who had never driven in snow before, said through an interpreter, “driving is everything to me and I want to take all my energy and put it into this hobby and this passion.”
