Kids Pitch In To Restock Trout In Hamden
The annual Trout Toss With Kids helped the state restock a Hamden lake.
The Department Of Energy And Environmental Protection invited fifth graders from Helen Street School and Ridge Hill School to get their hands wet and a little slimy.
The kids did most of the work, releasing nearly 1,000 rainbow, brook and brown trout into Lake Wintergreen.
Gov. Dannel Malloy was also there to toss in a few.
Kids quickly learned there was a method to the madness.
“Know that you’re not going to hurt them, so you have to touch them with your index finger, then you have to throw them in,” Zaria Edwards of Helen Street School said.
Although prolonged cold had really hampered restocking efforts, DEEP said it’s still striving to reach its restocking goal of almost 400,000 trout in Connecticut lakes, ponds and streams by opening day, April 19.
